Lesson Title: Fault and Earthquake Notes

State Standards:

ESS1 (5-8) POC-3 - Explain how Earth events ( over time and abruptly) can bring about changes in the Earths surface: landforms, ocean floor, rock features, or climate.
3b- Evaluating fast processes ( erosion, volcanoes and earthquakes) to determine how the Earth has changed and will continue to change over time.

Context of Lesson:

In this lesson the students will be taking notes on faults and earthquakes. The teacher will be supplying the students with a note sheet which will have either words or key phrases missing from its text. The students will have to follow along with the teacher in order to get the proper notes for the test. While the students are taking notes the teacher will be leading the discussion on faults and earthquakes and looking for proper student participation. The students will also have questions on the note sheet which the teacher will give the students time in class to complete. At the end of class the students will be receiving their homework questions which will be collected the following class. This lesson is right before the students lab on earthquakes, so it is important that the students get these notes this way they can properly complete the lab next class.

Opportunities to Learn:

Depth of Knowledge

DOK Level 1 Recall and Reproduction- In this lesson the students will simply be recalling and recognizing facts, terms and definitions based on Earthquakes and Faults.

Prerequisite Knowledge

The students will have learned about plate tectonics as well as some of the results from plate tectonics and will be able to apply this knowledge to earthquakes. Also students may have heard of the famous San Francisco earthquake and be able to describe some of the destruction which occurred during this natural disaster.

Plans for Differentiating Instruction

Advanced Student- This student may be looking ahead in the book while the teacher is in front of the class conducting her discussion and note session on earthquakes and faults. If these students are going far ahead on the notes that they are receiving then the teacher will be asking questions to the class. The teacher may ask the advanced students may complex questions, go on with their notes, then come back to this student and allow him or her to explain their answer to the class.
Lower Level Student- This student will be trying vigorously to keep up with the notes that the teacher is giving. If the teacher wants them to participate in the class discussion then the teacher must give the kid a heads up on when she is going to be asking a question to them. The teacher may ask those students one of the questions which are found on the note sheet already this way the students will be familiar with the material and be able to participate in the class.

Accommodations and modifications

For the lower level students when the teacher is giving the notes in front of the class, she will be handing out the students a copy of the notes which are missing key phrases and terms. For the lower level students the teacher should put the page number in where the student can find the information to fill in this blank on the note sheet. This way if the students miss some of the notes then they will be able to find the answer on their own. This will also give the students an opportunity to try to participate in the class discussion.

Environmental factors

The students will be sitting in rows in their original seats, and participating in class when necessary.

Materials

Textbook, Overhead, Student note sheet

Objectives:

  • The students to be able to properly use and identify the key terms regarding faults and earthquakes
  • the students will be able to describe some famous earthquakes or natural disasters caused by faults.
  • the students to expand their knowledge on how earthquakes are measured and located.
  • for the students to take proper notes and participate in a classroom environment.

Instruction:

Opening:

  • The teacher starts the class by asking the students if they remember the Asian Tsunami disaster back in 2004.
  • After taking in what the students have said about this topic the teacher will ask the students what they believe caused the Tsunami. The teachers job will be to clear up any misconceptions which the students state and relay to the students that the tsunami occurred because of an earthquake in the Ocean.
  • The teacher will then pass out the note sheet on Faults and Earthquakes to the class.

Engagement:

  • Before the class began the teachers prep work was to blank out some keywords and phrases on the copy of the note sheet which is given to the students. The teacher will have the completely filled in copy which will be placed on the overhead. The students must follow along with the teachers notes in order to receive the information necessary to complete the half empty note sheet which they have received.
  • This note sheet contains key terms from the chapter on earthquakes as well as a few questions which will allow the teacher to stop the class and try to get some kind of discussion out of the students.
  • While the class is going on it is the teachers job to be able to answer any of the students questions or misconceptions which they have on the note sheet about faults and earthquakes
  • The students role during this class will be to participate when the teacher asks the questions, as well as following along on the note sheet and filling in the correct answers.
  • Throughout the entire lesson the teacher will be trying to get the students to use their prior knowledge on earthquakes to help them fill in the note sheet without the teacher giving them the answers. The students will also have their textbooks which contains all the information necessary for them to find the answers to the blanks on the note sheet.
  • This class will have the teacher being the center of attention, but the teacher will be guiding the students through the sheet and helping fill in the blanks. The teacher will as often as possible try to create a discussion about earthquakes amongst the students.

Closure:

  • Exit Slips " What are some precautions which can be taken to minimize damage during an earthquake?"
  • This class will end with the teacher giving the students their homework assignment which will be 4 questions on earthquakes and faults which will be collected the next day in class.

Assessment:

  • Questions from this note sheet will be found on the Unit Test.
  • The homework assignment will be collected and graded as a homework grade.
